Day 3 & 4 & 5 Full Game Drive at Serengeti

Today you will depart Ngorongoro farm house, driving North via Ngorongoro highlands, over NgorongoroConservation Area before we arrive in Serengeti plains. Arrive at the gate where your guide will clear the formalities before you enter the greater Serengeti ecosystem, once we obtain permits, we’ll drive to Central Serengeti in the area famous as Seronera.

The Seronera Valley is a biological eco-tone , a place where the  Southern Serengeti plains  meet the Northern woodlands, giving rise to a multitude of species that co-exist from both habitats. Because the rivers drainages that run through the Seronera Valley are perennial, most of the animals here are residents, making it one of the best areas for game viewing year-round. Some of the species you’ll likely see exploring the Seronera Valley include lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, jackal, bat-eared fox, mongoose, elephant, giraffe, impala, waterbuck, hippo, Nile crocodile, topi, hartebeest, reedbuck, bushbuck, buffalo, baboon and vervet monkey. The acacia and sausage trees lining the rivers are some of the best places for spotting leopards in the Central Serengeti.

For the next two days you will be game driving on  the Central Serengeti in search of the big cats – lions, leopard and cheetah and the small delights, According to the Serengeti Lion Research Project, Central Serengeti home to over twelve lion prides that live within a one-hour game drive radius of the Seronera River Valley.  The Seronera is also home to a significant leopard population and this is your best chance of seeing many leopards on safari. Our favorite sites includes remote  South Eastern Serengeti where your expert guides will share intimate knowledge of  interesting lives of  lion prides covered in famous story of Quammen  http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2013/08/serengeti-lions/quammen-text and Moru Kopjes where Rhinos have been introduced, both location offers  exclusive game drives  as an alternative from overcrowded central Serengeti.

Day 6 : Serengeti to Ngorongoro

This is your last day in Serengeti, If you’re feeling up to it, we’ll depart at 6:00 am with a breakfast box for an early morning game drive to see the wildlife when they are most active and enjoy a glorious African sunrise. Spend the morning game driving along the kopjes in  Southern part of serengeti, before we exit the naabi gate and ascend the Ngorongoro Highlands. Time permits we’ll visit the world famous archeological site, the Olduvai Gorge.

When the road first reaches the Crater rim there is a splendid viewpoint. From the rim you can look down

some 500 meters to the crater floor. Spread out below you is all the features that make the crater a microcosm of the Serengeti: open grassland, streams, swamps, lakes, forests, hills and steep slopes. These are the habitats that allow so many animals to live together in such a small area. Take some time to study the Crater floor with a pair of binoculars. You can usually see buffalo, hippo and elephant near the swamps and sometimes rhino on the plains. The edge or top of the Crater’s rim is unbroken, though indented by watercourses. Ngorongoro Crater is really a caldera, the sunken or collapsed cone of a volcano. It is the largest inactive and unbroken caldera in the world. Before Ngorongoro collapsed about 2.5 million years ago, it may have rivaled Mount Kilimanjaro in size. Please dress up warmly as the temperature will drop with an increase in elevation.

Dinner and overnight included.

Day 7 : Ngorongoro to Zanzibar.

We suggest departing the lodge at 6.00AM and descend the steep walls of the crater for an early morning game drive. Your driver guide will pack a picnic breakfast to be enjoyed in the crater when you build up an appetite. This is the best time to spot black rhinos as they can usually be seen in the early morning departing Lerai Forrest for grazing. Lerai is a Maasai word referring to the tall yellow barked acacias that dominate the forest.

Keep a look out for black rhinos and also the massive bull elephants. Take a break for a delicious bush breakfast at Ngoitokitok Springs where you can stretch your safari legs, listen to the grunts of the local hippos and admire the profusion of bird life.

The Ngorongoro Crater is a world heritage site, the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and is commonly referred to as the 8th wonder of the world. The 2,000 feet high walls of the approximately 10 mile wide crater create a natural amphitheatre for the densest populations of large animals anywhere. The rich soils and abundant, year-round water provide an ideal habitat for a variety of approximately 22,000 large animals. Herbivores that you will likely encounter include elephant, black rhino, hippo, buffalo, eland, zebra, wildebeest, hartebeest, waterbuck, warthog, Grant’s gazelle and Thomson’s gazelle. Giraffe, impala and topi are strangely absent from the Crater floor, though they are common in the nearby Serengeti. Primates include baboons and vervet monkeys. Carnivores that you will likely encounter include lion, cheetah, hyena and jackal. Leopards, servals, bat eared foxes and ratels are also resident within the Crater but are much more elusive.

The Ngorongoro Crater is the only spot in Africa where one can see all three species of jackals including the black-backed jackal, golden jackal and side-striped jackal. Jackal pairs mate for life and are capable hunters taking a variety of prey items including insects, birds, rodents and gazelle fawns though they are also opportunistic scavengers.

Simply wonderful from the moment we arrived in Tanzania. Never been to Africa before and tents are not our usual accommodation - but this was an exceptional environment and we felt privileged to be so close to the animals we came to see 24/7

We had high hopes/expectations for our trip, and they were thoroughly exceeded! We loved every minute of it, and both camps, although different, were spectacular in their own ways. We hope this is not our last trip to Africa
